Welcome to Martinsburg Downtown

Home to the state's first post office, Martinsburg is the largest city in the Eastern Panhandle and serves as the Berkeley County seat. The introduction of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1841 put Martinsburg on the map, becoming one of the state's bustling railroad stops, linking West Virginia to bordering states and beyond.

Later Martinsburg became an important geographical location during the Civil War. One of the town's most notorious natives is infamous Confederate spy Belle Boyd, who was caught in Martinsburg in 1863 and imprisoned. You can visit her childhood home at 126 East Race Street, which has been described as the finest Greek Revival house in town.

Though Martinsburg is now considered a bedroom community for the Washington, D.C., metro area and lacks no modern conveniences, the town's storied past is evident in the well-preserved  historic homes and national landmarks. With 10 districts on the National Register of Historic Places.
